After
four years of struggling through high school (graduating with a strong
D avg), and a short attempt at higher education (where I was asked to remove
myself after one year), I began a 24 year career in the U.S. Navy.
Although my first choice was Musician's Mate, I ended up in Lakehurst N.J.
at weather school. Being a Weather Guesser was kind of like
being a Witch Doctor. You try to convince people to believe in something
that you, yourself aren't really sure about. My ego told me I was
a good weatherman, but I was never 100%. Then again, neither was
anybody else. I was never the best, but I trained my troops to be the best.
With the guidance of many good people I had the chance to find myself and
debelop my leadership abilities. My final tour was the one I had
been dreaming about, that of Leading Chief of the Weather/Oceanography
Detachment at NAS Barbers Pt. Hawaii. In my last six year I did what
every veteran chief does, teach the next generation of chiefs. There
are a lot of Chiefs out there with my fingerprints on em'. However, no
matter how much I loved the Navy, I knew that some day my Navy career would
end so I had to prepare for the future. After eight years of night
school, I finally completed my college education. I got my bachelors degree,
May 1990 and retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief, June 1990. In 1993
I got my Masters of Education degree. Now I was ready to embark upon
my second career, Social Studies teacher. I now teach in a mid-sized,
rural high school in the mountains of Colorado. I teach teen-agers
Geography, Global Economies, Current Events and Economics. It's not easy
but it's what I want to do and what I enjoy doing. In addition to teaching
I also get to do two things I really enjoy. I am the announcer for the
school's football, basketball and baseball teams. In addition, I
get to exercise my hobby of photography as I am the unofficial/unpaid school
photographer. Right now I'm not the best teacher in the school,
but I get better every day. One day, there will be a lot of young
people in Woodland Park, Colorado and North Teller County with my fingerprints
on em'.
My Motto: "Do
what you enjoy, enjoy what you do."
